1979 - Smulyan & friends purchase WSVL in Shelbyville.

1980 - Emmis (the Hebrew word for "truth") incorporated in Indiana.

July, 1981 - WENS (formerly WSVL) goes on the air with an adult contemporary format.

1983 - Emmis purchases WLOL-FM in Minneapolis/St Paul.

1984 - Emmis purchases KSHE-FM in St Louis and KMGG (renamed KPWR in 1986) in Los Angeles from Century Broadcasting.

1986 - KPWR named "Station of the Year" by Duncan's American Radio.

1986 - Emmis purchases WAPP-FM (now WQHT-FM) and WHN-AM (now WFAN) in New York City and WAVA-FM in Washington DC from Doubleday Broadcasting Company, Inc.

1988 - Emmis purchases 5 radio stations from NBC, selling two right away and operating KYUU-FM (now KXXX) in San Francisco; WKQX-FM in Chicago and WJIB-FM in Boston.

1988 - Emmis purchases KKHT-FM in Houston.

1988 - Emmis purchases Indianapolis Monthly.

1989 - Smulyan & friends purchase the Seattle Mariners.

1990-92 - Emmis sells KKHT (Houston), KXXX (San Fran), WLOL (Minn), WAVA (DC), WJIB (Boston) and WFAN (NYC).

1992 - Smulyan & friends sell the Seattle Mariners.

1993 - Emmis purchases Atlanta Monthly from American Express Publishing Corporation.

April, 1994 - Emmis purchases WIBC-AM and WNAP-FM in Indianapolis from the Horizon Broadcast Corporation.

December, 1994 - Emmis purchases WRKS-FM in New York City from the Summit Communications Group Inc.

March 1, 1994 - Emmis becomes a public company (EMMS: NASDAQ).

1995 - Emmis becomes the first company to own top-rated stations in New York and LA simultaneously.

1995 - Smulyan voted one of the 10 most influential radio executives of the past two decades by top radio industry publication, R & R
