The days after September 11 demonstrated the power of media like no other time in our nation's history. Emmis rose to the challenge of those days by not just providing our communities with the information they needed, but by also supplying the leadership those communities deserved. Whether by sponsoring community forums, holding public vigils, supporting blood drives, providing public service announcements, offering counseling services or hosting telethons and other fundraisers, the Emmis Family stepped up and led the efforts to reach, to comfort, to heal.

As opposed to dictating a one-size-fits-all response, Emmis encouraged its properties to respond in the ways that would have the greatest impact on their own communities. As a result, the efforts were varied and creative. Some properties collected dollars for their local Red Cross or United Way, but many raised dollars for the Emmis Relief Fund. While a few of the stations and magazines created local assistance programs, in some cases those efforts were slowed or even blocked by red tape. For those properties, the Emmis Relief Fund made it easy to hit the ground running with a system for accepting donations from listeners who were eager to help in some way.

The results of these varied efforts are astounding. To date, the various programs at Emmis entities across the nation have raised more than $6 million in cash or in-kind services. The Emmis Relief Fund has raised $287829.96 and the funds are being given to the United Way's September 11 Fund.
